How Often Should You Replace Glad Hand Seals?
There is a lot of conflicting advice about how often to replace glad hand seals. Here is the real-world schedule I recommend after 25 years working on air brake systems.
Severe Service Operations
Construction, logging, winter operations, and heavy city work: Replace every 6 to 9 months. Inspect monthly.
Regional and Mixed Duty
Replace every 12 months. Inspect every 45 to 60 days.
Long-Haul Linehaul
Replace every 18 months maximum. Inspect every 90 days.
Rubber degrades from constant pressure, vibration, ozone, and temperature cycles. Once it hardens or develops flat spots, the seal is already failing.
